Pipette, dropper, measuring spoon ... be careful not to go wrong when giving a medicine to your child. The National Agency for Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) recalls the rules to respect to avoid errors.

  • "Do not mix the pipettes anymore", this is the slogan of an information and awareness campaign of the National Agency for Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) for parents. The goal: to remind the importance of respecting the prescribed dose, whether with a pipette, a cup, a dropper or a measuring spoon.
  • This campaign follows many reports of errors medications, mainly for children from 2 to 11 years old. Nearly one-third caused an adverse effect, more or less serious. After analysis, these poor dosages reveal human errors (the administration of a drug with the device of another), but also a misunderstanding of the instructions for use.

To help parents to see more clearly, the ANSM has established 4 simple rules to limit the risk of error:

  • 1) Each drug corresponds to a delivery device: a pipette can not be replaced by a spoon or an oral syringe and vice versa. Inverting them can be dangerous and inefficient.
  • 2) Keep the administration device (pipette, spoon ...) in the box of the drug corresponding to avoid confusion when you use them again.
  • 3) If the device is lost or in doubt about its use, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice.
  • 4) Always read the instructions for use.
